A network of ponds

Ponds are hugely important for wildlife, supporting as they do many species and providing food for still others – and also for gardening since they   promote healthy populations of frogs which eat slugs and other pests.

On St Margaret’s Allotments, plot-holders have now created more than twelve ponds, providing a valuable network of freshwater habitats and a real contribution to the maintenance of biodiversity across the site and beyond.

Pond

Sadly, ponds are now rare in the British countryside, and ponds in good condition rarer still.
